State Relays - Through Rain & Wind! |
On Sunday 27 November 2005 and in terrible rain and wind, sic teams from Helensburgh ventured to Homebush for the State Relays, the biggest event in the Little Athletics calendar. U8 Girls Olivia Salmon ran the first leg like a practised professional and was followed by the 'pocket rocket' Amy dinnis, Brooke Mason and the legendary Lauren Calver. The girls fantastic speed brought them a third place and a note as a team to watch. U10 Girls Our first representatives were the U10 girls with late replacem, ent U9 Christie Picken. Christie started brilliantly and her good work was supported by Holly Hozack, Zoe Dubleicz and Carlie Nichols who brought them home in 4th place. Unfortunately, the girls missed the final by 0.01! U10 Boys The boys were on fire from the start with Jaimie Wigley, Nathan Murray, Aaron Calver and Jesse Cobb, but a small problem with the baton change -it slipped from their grasp- meant they only finished 6th. U11 Boys High & Long Jump This team, with Corey Hahn and John Blackwell springing horizontally and Shane Murray and Jessie McCumstie-Turoa springing vertically, recorded the best result of the day, just missing a medal in coming 4th. Shane Murray, in particular, is to be congratulated for jumping the 2nd highest height for the day. U12 Mixed After waiting 8 hours for a start, the mixed team'sjye Scott got the team away to a great start. He passed the baton to Sarah Bowden, the 'Blonde Streak', in the back straight and thence to the flying Vanessa Morrison speeding around the bend. Damien Rees brought the team home in 6th place. U12 Boys High & Long Jump Composed of Ryan Wigley, Josh Carter, Finn Dublewicz, and Clayton McCarthy, this team was up against some tough competition but manage a creditable 14th. Thank you to all competitors and parents for their support on the day and to those who coached them. Tracey Scott.

Parents to go back to school |
Over the past few nights you might have noticed a few new faces wandering around with clipboards attached to their hands. These were LA Zone officials tutoring and testing some of our parents for their Officials Certificates. As a result of the program, our club has 20 new certified officials who, it is hoped, will lift the standard of judging on Friday nights. Congratulations to the successful candidates! |

Reminders |
Parents, can you remember to sign your names at the table when you assist on Friday nights? At the moment there are a few families not meeting their obligations by helping each week and they will be receiving letters. Generally, however, it is pleasing to see that most events are well staffed. |
Queries Got a good photo of one of our athletes? Or a story? Please, pass it on to the editor, Malachi O'Donoghue, the distinguished looking, grey-haired gentleman timing. |
Uniforms |
We still have a number of uniforms available should anyone need one. Remember, it is essential that competitors in the Zone Carnival have the correct uniform with the centre number on the back, their own number on the front and the red border on the number showing. Kirsi Benson has more information. |
Interesting fact... Did you know that it takes around 30 litres of paint and 4 hours to mark out the oval for our meetings? That means about $90 per fortnight on paint. We are fortunate that one of our sponsors, Crocker Paint and Wallpapers, provides the paint at a 'budget price'. |
GRIPES |
1. At the moment there are a number of parents drifting around the finish line and getting in the line of vision of the place judges and timer. Parents are reminded that they should only be on the oval if they are registered as assisting in an event that night or are looking aftera tot competitor. If you are not involved in one of these activities, you are not covered by our insurance and most likely are just getting in the way. 2. If you are looking after a small child, please keep a tight watch on them. We have had young children wandering acros the track during the events and it is just a matter of time before someone is injured. |
Reminder to Athletes: |
1. Please don't run down the outside of the trach while a race is in progress - it messes up the place judging and often means the times are invalid. That is , the athletes efforts are not recorded! 2. Wait until you have an adult with you before attempting the javelin. The consequences of misuse of this, our most dangerous, equipment, are well known. 3. Look both ways before crossing the track and then cross quickly. We have already had injuries to competitors who have collided with woogatheres this year. |
And also, remember... We have starting blocks for your use. Just ask an official at the 200 m or 400 m start if you wish to get in some early practice for the Zone. |
